A DAY OF ROMAN HIGHLIGHTS
This tour is about immersing ourselves in the cultural, historical, and culinary highlights of Rome. Let us reveal a complete vision of the city with its hidden symbolism, palaces of the popes and nobility as well as the greatest works of art by Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini, and Borromini, bringing history to life. We will uncover the secrets of the city by exploring the most beautiful piazzas and fountains dotted throughout the centre of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Rome. Starting in the centro storico, we will make our way to Piazza Navona, where we will see Bernini’s famous fountain of the Four Rivers. From there we will head to the Pantheon, stopping in a few local churches on the way. These Baroque gems preserve the original 17th century atmosphere of the city containing masterpieces by Michelangelo and Caravaggio.
We will refuel by taking time to savour traditional street food, taking breaks now and then to visit my favourite places for gelato, pizza and coffee! After visiting the Pantheon we will meander through the amazing Campo di Fiori stopping to enjoy the local market and head towards Piazza Farnese to learn about the infamous Roman Noble families whose repurposed Palaces still adorn the city today. As we make our way down Via del Pellegrino, the traditional pilgrim route to the Vatican, we will stop to enjoy the views from the side of the Tiber while appreciating the local colour of the city centre.
At this point we can stop for lunch and visit one of my favourite restaurant’s Da Luigi where everyone can enjoy a lovely local Roman meal outside under a shady gazebo. After lunch we can make our way through the Jewish Ghetto - another incredibly rich and historic area of the city. Here we will encounter how ancient and recent history collide through a patchwork of architecture.
We will also stop at the charming Turtle Fountain, a notorious piazza for spotting Roman celebrities! From here we can cross over the Tiber Island in the direction of Trastevere to discover the ivy-covered buildings, a quintessential element of the historically preserved Roman neighbourhood. Trastevere is famous for its tiny winding streets and secret passageways. Despite being a major touristic destination, it has managed to preserve a strong local identity, and it’s not difficult to step off the main routes and escape the bustling streets. Here there is much to see including the lovely Santa Cecilia and Santa Maria in Trastevere churches. As we stroll we can decide how to proceed with the afternoon perhaps hopping on a bus or taxi towards the up and coming neighbourhood of Testaccio or towards Circus Maximus to visit the Priory of the Knights of Malta. As the day progresses we can decide what works best but not to worry there is plenty to see in Rome and you are guaranteed to want to come back!
